What is One Stop Centre Scheme?
Gender-based violence is a global issue and has been prevalent for a very long time. Any act of violence can be termed as gender-based violence if it causes physical, psychological, or sexual abuse to women. This includes threats of the same or coercion regardless of whether it happening in public or private. In India, many acts of gender-based violence are quite common. Some examples include honor killings, sexual harassment, child and women trafficking, acid attacks, and so on.
When has the Sakhi Scheme Started in India?
Keeping the plight of women in mind, the Ministry of Women and Child Development in India (MWCD) has come up with a scheme. This scheme is called the One Stop Centre Scheme and is funded by the central government of India. This scheme was implemented on 1st April 2015 and is popularly known as ‘Sakhi’. Due to this scheme, any woman who has been prey to gender-based violence of any kind receives support and empowerment.
How many One Stop Centers are there in India?
One-Stop Centres are being established across the nation, accessible by any affected woman. As of now, there are two thirty-four such functional one-stop centers in India.
Benefits of One Stop Centre Scheme
One Stop Centre will support any woman and even minor girls who are victims of any kind of gender-based violence. Any such woman will be provided with holistic services regardless of caste, creed, age, class, sexual orientation, marital status, race, or other such factors. Women facing any kind of abuse can thus be facilitated with proper addressing of the issues.
Objective of the Sakhi Scheme
The main objective of this scheme is to provide a range of various immediate emergency as well as non-emergency services. These are provided to the aggrieved women and are all available in one room. These are all provided free of cost under the One Stop Centre Scheme.
Services Offered by Sakhi One Stop Centre Scheme:
Medical Assistance | Aggrieved women who need medical assistance would be taken to the nearest hospital for medical aid. The whole process is to be carried out according to the protocols and regulations laid down by the MWCD. |
Emergency Rescue Services | Under the OSC scheme, rescue services would be provided to women in need. Proper arrangements are also made to rescue the victim and bring her to the nearest shelter home or hospital. |
Legal Aid | Affected women can seek legal help from a selected panel of lawyers. In case they want to raise the case to the court, it can be done with the help of an advocate of their choice. |
Counselling | It is of no surprise that women who have faced gender-based violence in either home, educational sector, work, or any other public or private place are not in a healthy mental state. Hence, a skilled counsellor providing psycho-social services would be available for them on call. Thus, the victims can again achieve the right state of mind, get a boost of confidence and be ready to address the issue and even seek justice. |
Assistance in Lodging FIR / NCR / DIRShelter | Arrangements have been made so that affected women can receive a temporary shelter or even a long-term shelter if required. An aggrieved woman can stay in a temporary shelter for a maximum of five days. She can bring her children to stay with her well. However, a daughter of any age of the victim can stay with her but in the case of a son, he will be allowed to stay only if he is 8 years old or younger. |
Video-Conferencing | Through this facility, a woman in need can avail of video conferencing services to address her issue. She can record her statement for the court or police from the OSC itself. This serves as a hassle-free proceeding and easy issuance of statements. |
