- Questions of the Preliminary Exam in WBPSC WBCS will be of Multiple Choice (Objective MCQ) Type.
- Exam will be conducted offline.

WBCS মেইন পরীক্ষার প্রশ্নপত্রের প্যাটার্ন – Detailed Syllabus
ডব্লিউ বি সি এস মেন পরীক্ষায় মোট আটটি পেপার থাকে. এর মধ্যে 6 টি পেপার কম্পালসারি এবং 2 টি ঐচ্ছিক বিষয়ের পেপার থাকে. প্রার্থীদের যে কোনো একটি ঐচ্ছিক বিষয়কে চয়ন করতে হয় এবং ওই একটি বিষয়ের উপরই দুটি পেপার থাকে.
প্রত্যেকটি পেপার এর মান 200 নম্বর হয়ে থাকে.
সর্বমোট 1600 নম্বরের পরীক্ষা হয় গ্রুপ A এবং গ্রুপ B এর জন্য.
গ্রুপ C এবং গ্রুপ D এর জন্য ঐচ্ছিক বিষয় থাকে না. তাই গ্রুপ সি ও গ্রুপ ডি এর জন্য মেন পরীক্ষা সর্বমোট 1400 নম্বরের হয়ে থাকে.

Paper I Syllabus:
- Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali – Letter writing (within 150 words),
- Drafting of Report (within 200 words),
- Précis Writing,
- Composition and Translation from English to Bengali / Hindi / Urdu / Nepali / Santali
Paper II Syllabus:
- English – Letter writing (within 150 words) / Drafting of Report (within 200 words),
- Précis Writing,
- Composition and Translation from Bengali / Hindi / Urdu / Nepali / Santali to English
Paper III Syllabus:
General Studies-I : (i) Indian History with special emphasis on National Movement and (ii) Geography of India with special reference to West Bengal.
Paper IV Syllabus:
General Studies-II : Science and Scientific & Technological advancement, Environment, General Knowledge and Current Affairs.
Environment Syllabus will consist of the following topics:
- Bio diversity and Coastal Regulation Zone,
- Global Warming,
- Industrial and Environmental Pollution,
- Ozone Layer and related issues
Paper V Syllabus:
The Constitution of India and Indian Economy including role and functions of the Reserve Bank of India.
Indian Economy including role and functions of the Reserve Bank of India Syllabus will be of following topics:
- Central State relation and devolution of central funds to state,
- Planning process and objectives of five years plan,
- Functions of RBI and Monetary policy,
- Central Finance Commission & State Finance Commission
- Fiscal Policy of Government of India.
Paper VI Syllabus:
Reasoning questions will be asked from following topics:
- Analytical Reasoning: Data Sufficiency,
- Logical Reasoning: Logical Deduction, Forcefulness of the Arguments, Implication of sentences, Inferring from diagrams,
- Series: Letter series, Number series,
- Inferring from Data,

Arithmetic Questions will be similar to that of the Compulsory Mathematics paper at the Madhyamik Examination.

W.B.C.S Mains Exam Instructions
- BCS selection process mainly consists of three steps – Prelims, Mains & Interview. The mains is the second stage of selection.
- Main Exam is the toughest of all the three exams. Deep knowledge of subjects of a candidate is tested through the mains exam.
- The mains test is of 8 papers. Six are compulsory and Two are optional.
- To pass the mains exam, one must qualify the cut off marks. There is no subject specific cut off. Candidates have to clear aggregate cut off which is decided by the commission depending on the caste category.
- After passing the mains exam, interview round will be conducted. Candidates will be called for interview in order of merit list prepared after the WBCS Mains result.
Verification of Documents
After the successful candidates are recommended for the Group A, B, C & D posts, they have to undergo a document scrutinisation round. The candidates have to verify the documents they have uploaded during application form fill up. For these, one must take the following documents with him / her:
- Personal Identification Card such as (PAN, Aadhar, Voter),
- Graduation Certificate,
- Marksheet of graduation,
- Birth Certificate,
- Certificate and Marksheets of Class 10 and 12th,
- SC, ST, OBC, PH Certificate (If any),
- Other Extra Curriculum Activities Certificate etc.
Please note that a basic documents verification may be conducted during the interview round.

The answer can be written in English or Bengali. For some optional subjects, the answer may be written in Nepali Language also.
There will be .25 negative marks for each wrong answer of MCQ.
The prelims will be of 2 Hours duration.
